Is it still murder if the president orders it?

What if the president actually does the killing — would it be murder then?

Is the first killing a murder? What about the 10th — or the 20th — or the 50th? Is there some point where it’s not murder anymore, it’s just . . . business? Or public policy? Or national defense?

I know this sounds ridiculous. Years ago, it would have been. But now, we are watching a president order a hit on people — almost over a dozen hits, over 50 60 marks.

And they are clean — the mobs and gangs are envious of how clean these hits are. No bodies. No vehicles. No evidence. No witnesses. Just some cool videos. Neat and tidy. Clean killings.

I’d guess that the White House team is slapping high-fives after each hit. Pouring bourbons all around. Telling jokes, mimicking those Latin American accents.

You can visualize this, can’t you? Try as you might, you know, deep in your soul, that they’re celebrating these murders. They’re replaying videos. Whooping it up when they see the explosion. Eagerly waiting for the next video, the next hit.

You can’t do this kind of work without finding joy in it. Because, if you saw it for the murder that it is, it would tear you apart. Maybe not the first time, but surely the fifth, the tenth, the twentieth time.

So, is it still murder if the president orders it?

I bet they’re saying “No, it isn’t! It’s not murder, it’s not homicide, they’re not people. Because the president said they’re not people. They’re drug lords, or terrorists … they’re narco-terrorists!”

Well, it’s been going on week after week, sometimes day after day, now month after month. We’re getting used to it. It’s not a big story anymore. It isn’t the headline. It isn’t the lead story. Oh, sure, at first, some folks were shocked, outraged, demanded an investigation. At first … but not now, not anymore.

It’s become normal. Dog bites man. No big deal. Happens all the time. Not news.

So, is it still murder if the president orders it?

To quote a White House source: “Who cares?”
